From April 30 to August 31, 2025 at the Maison internationale, the exhibition JEMONDE, L'ÂME DE LA CITÉ by Maud Louvrier Clerc presents a snapshot of the state of mind of campus residents through their soul portraits and invites introspection with an olfactory experience.
A PARTICIPATORY EXHIBITION
This exhibition reflects the cultural diversity of the city and embodies its shared values. The portraits of souls exhibited were collected by the artist during participatory polysensory writing workshops organized in 2024 and 2025 in several houses of the Cité internationale. Residents share their stories, which are interwoven to create a mosaic of stories, emotions and worldviews.
A soul portrait consists of 4 sentences to complete: I am (first name)... , I live in a world... , My commitment... and My fetish phrase. The set of portraits of soul constitutes a poetic exploration of the anthropocene named JEMONDE. This action research created by Maud Louvrier Clerc is part of the Humanities Art & Society programme supported by UNESCO, the International Council for Philosophy and Human Sciences and Mémoire de l'Avenir.
AN OLFACTORY EXPERIENCE
Because smell plays an essential role in our perception of the world, an olfactory device makes it possible to accompany the reading of soul portraits, facilitate the writing of his own and anchor the memory of this dialogue. Based on these discussions with campus residents, the artist created the perfume “JEMONDE 2025”, in partnership with the Studio des parfums, composed of some thirty fragrances including cedar, fig, sandalwood, jasmine and cinnamon. Each scent evokes the countries, territories and regions from which the students of the campus come. The perfume anchors a memory and invites to travel.
A MOMENT OF INTROSPECTION
Thanks to a web application "Create your portrait" and a dedicated online page CIUP X JEMONDE, the project continues to collect new testimonies. During the exhibition, a QR code is also available. Each portrait can be published in 7 languages (French, German, English, Chinese, Spanish, Italian and Norwegian).
Each participant is invited to present who he or she is, this unique and singular “I am” and then describe the world as he or she sees it, feels it and presents their commitment in that world. This project highlights how each citizen mobilizes, stands up in the face of the turmoil of his daily life. Everyone can then become aware that they are part of the world, that they contribute to co-create. This self-description in its connection to the world is intended to reinforce a sense of interdependence. Reading soul portraits also promotes knowledge of the other.
"We are all atoms and JEMONDE made me feel like a molecule, united with others by many different forces.”
Sofia Nascetti, resident of the House of Italy
"JEMONDE is at the heart of contemporary debates on identity, social cohesion and economic cooperation through the commitments of the various actors. JEMONDE offers a way to better understand each other with respect and authenticity, which is one of the best ways to work for peace.” Martine Garcia-Mascarenhas, director of the Monaco Foundation
The CIUP x JEMONDE project was carried out under the impetus of the Maison de Norvège and in collaboration with the Maison de l'Île-de-France, the Julie-Victoire Daubié Residence, the Lucien Paye Foundation, the Maison de l'Italie, the Fondation de Monaco, The Swiss Foundation, the Canadian Students' House and the Avicenne Foundation.
